The Maca plant is a plant in the genus Kressen from Peru. It belongs to the family of the cross-flower family and is colloquially also known as Peru Ginseng. It grows only in the higher Andes and has been used there for centuries as a natural remedy and food. The plant is known, among other things, for its potency-enhancing effect. It is often taken as an alternative aphrodisiac. Among other things, the root also has the ability to relieve pain and discomfort during menopause. In the West, Maca Powder has long been known as a superfood. The substance available here is usually offered as a powder, but is also found in the form of capsules, tablets or as tea. [1] So-called organic maca is of the highest quality and is completely free of pollutants or other additives. Unlike in Peru, the plant is mainly taken in Germany because of its euphoric and performance-enhancing effect.

What is Maca?

Maca is a plant that thrives mainly in the highlands of the Peruvian Andes. It is located in the regions of Puno and Moquegua. For about two millennia, it has been used there as a food and medicinal plant. It belongs to the family of the Brassicaceae, the genus of the Kressen family. The maca plant is a small plant. It reaches a growth height of up to 20 centimetres. The active ingredients are located in the lower part of the plant, in carrot-shaped hypocotyl tubers. These root-like constructs have a diameter of up to 5 centimeters and serve as a water reservoir for the plant. The colour spectrum of the root ranges from white to pink to deep red colouring. The tuber of the maca plant contains many important substances such as:

  • Proteins
  • Zinc
  • Iron
  • Magnesium
  • Carbohydrates
  • Calcium
  • Sugar
  • Minerals
  • Starch materials
  • Phosphorus
  • Vitamins

The smell of the plant is slightly reminiscent of butter. In terms of taste, it should taste slightly nutty and fine, so that it is also processed in some foods such as smoothies in this country. Despite the years of tradition of maca root as a medicinal herb, scientific research into the plant is in its infancy. So far, there are no relevant scientific studies on the effectiveness of the roots. However, the plant is not completely unexplored.

A Peruvian scientist named Gustavo Gonzales handed a group of subjects between 20 and 40 years old a 12-week-old maca powder. He then examined the subjects and their fertility. After only two weeks, the average sperm count doubled. At the same time, male hormones were increasingly formed. According to the subjects’ self-reporting, personal sexual desire increased significantly during the course of the study. Later, neurologist Cabieses Fernando demonstrated a potency-enhancing effect of the maca plant. Sustainable consumption not only increases the ability to erection, but also increases sexual desire in the long term.

How does Maca work?

The roots are full of essential micronutrients, amino acids, fatty acids and antioxidants. These can help capture free radicals and relieve oxidative stress. The plant therefore has the ability to combat signs of aging, prevent cell damage and stop the development of chronic diseases. At the same time, taking Maca Powder increases the release of superoxide dismutase and glutathione. According to experience and studies in animals, not only can the use of tea, organic maca effectively prevent oxidative stress, but also significantly improve the value of tryglycerides in the liver and cholesterol levels as well as blood sugar levels. A test tube study even demonstrated a protective effect against neurological damage.

An effect also unfolds from the perspective of nutrition. Organic maca is an optimal supplement to the normal diet. It contains many fibers, proteins, important minerals and various vitamins. Copper and iron are also contained in small quantities. In addition, it contains health-promoting phytonutrients and glucosinolates as well as polyphenols. It is ideal for a vegan diet as maca powder is a purely herbal product. To obtain a product without pollutants and additives, it is recommended to buy Organic Maca Powder. 100 grams included:

  • 3.6 grams fat
  • 71.4 grams of carbohydrates
  • 31.1 grams of sugar
  • 7.1 grams of fiber
  • 14.3 grams of protein

In addition to its health-promoting effect, the tuber is said to have an increase in potency. It is designed to cure symptoms such as depressive conditions, pain in menopause or a attenuated libido. Men in particular should benefit from the potency-enhancing effect. In addition to the desire for sex, the sperm quality and sperm count also increases. The sperm count is expected to double just two weeks after regular ingestion. Memory performance can also be increased by taking Maca Powder. In Peru, Maca has been a respected dietary supplement for decades to improve performance. Various studies have shown improved learning performance of students who regularly ate Maca. The substance is often taken as an addition in desserts, stirred into smoothies and mueslis or as cocoa. You can also buy maca in the form of capsules, tablets or tea.

Athletes also take advantage of the performance-enhancing effects of Maca Powder. The substance provides increased vitality and motivation. One study showed that cyclists benefit from increased endurance and overall fitness by regularly taking maca. This effect could be attributed to the high proportion of antioxidants. In addition, Maca contains a variety of herbal sterols. They are similar to animal cholesterol and have a positive effect on one’s own cholesterol levels. The plant sterols inhibit the absorption of animal cholesterol in the small intestine. Poor LDL cholesterol can be kept on a low level. The following effects are said to be of the medicinal herb:

  • works against stress and exhaustion
  • is a good nutrient supplier
  • improves sperm production
  • increases libido
  • lowers cholesterol levels
  • has an aphrodisiac effect
  • has a vitalizing effect
  • improves learning performance and memory
  • increases a man’s fertility

The natural product has few side effects. In the lack of scientifically exploitable experience, only daring predictions can be made about the harmfulness of maca. Basically, the product has been used for thousands of years in Peru as stimulant and aphrodisiac. Since there are no reports of serious side effects, these can be excluded. Of course, it is advisable not to exceed the recommended dose per day. [2] A higher overdose is linked to side effects such as hyperactivity or high blood pressure. In rare cases, weight gain, main problems, diarrhea, hot flush, gastrointestinal problems or insomnia are also reported. However, many of these side effects can also be the product of an individual intolerance of Kressen.

If there is an intolerance or even allergy to the plant, the product should be excluded. Taking it in combination with thyroid problems can also be problematic. The thyroid problem can even be exacerbated by taking it in the worst case. However, a so-called thyroid underfunction can be treated well by tea or powder.

Which Maca is the best?

One of the best products on the market is the Maca forte from the Sanasis brand. The Organic Maca is manufactured in Canada and meets the highest standards of quality and effect. The 6-fold concentrated organic maca powder is presented in capsules. The product contains pure maca powder, which has been filled in capsules of cellulose. The high-quality Maca is made from the Maca black. For this purpose, it is gelatinized in a gentle process. The Maca Root is pulled the entire strength from the tuber. The active ingredients contained are present by this process in concentrated and highly effective form. The concentration of the product of Sanasis is in a ratio of 6:1. The dietary supplement is awarded and certified several times. It meets the highest standards of quality and purity.

Basically, the color of the root is an indicator of the proportion of active ingredients contained. For the production, therefore, 80 of the rich maca was used in black, in which most active ingredients are located. The organic maca of Sanasis comes from purely organic cultivation and therefore contains no other additives or impuritiesthat could tarnish the effect of the product. If you want to buy Maca, you have the option between capsules, tablets or maca powder. It can also be purchased in processed form such as tea. The starting material for these products is always the root. These are available in different colours.

Maca black

The maca black is the most potent form of the root and has the strongest effect in dried form. The powder is best used to combat potency problems, strengthen male libido or build fitness, stamina and muscles. [3] By taking it regularly, it increases memory performance. As it is the rarest form of maca, it is rarely available in pure form and often contains additives.

Maca yellow

Most of the products that can currently be bought come from the yellow roots. It is particularly suitable for increasing concentration and improving general well-being.

Maca red

The red roots, like the yellow roots, contain fewer active ingredients and thus have a milder effect on the body. This powder is used to improve overall well-being and to mix with black powder.

Which variety is preferred depends on the effect to be achieved. The product Maca forte from Sanasis has a mixing ratio of 6:1 and has a particularly high and strong effectiveness due to the high content of Maca black. If you want to buy Maca, you should inform yourself in advance about the effectiveness of the product.

What complaints does Maca help against?

Experience has shown that the effect, regardless of the dosage form, has a positive effect on the body. The reason for its positive effect on general health lies in the composition of many different active ingredients, essential vitamins and antioxidants. If you want to buy Maca to treat yourself alternatively without conventional medications, this should only be done in consultation with your GP. [4] Before taking it, of course, it should also be tested for a potential intolerance or allergy. Taking maca in conjunction with other natural medicinal herbs and remedies is safe.

to improve fitness

Various studies have shown a positive effect in terms of athletic performance. In the fitness scene and in bodybuilding, Maca has been known as a natural doping agent for years. It accelerates muscle building through its natural active ingredients and provides more strength. Animal studies have shown a positive effect on endurance and performance. Even a study with cycling could prove that regular intake of capsules or tablets promotes fitness.

to increase brain function and memory

For years, the root extract has been used to increase the learning performance of school children. This effect has been demonstrated in animal research. Long-term intake can improve memory and overall brain functions. Because of the variety of antioxidants, Maca also protects the brain from age-related decay and potential neurological damage.

For the treatment of sexual dysfunction

Taking just two doses of Maca a day can significantly reduce the negative effects of sexual dysfunction. Studies have shown that sexual function normalized somewhat in women who regularly took maca for three months and suffered from sexual dysfunction caused by depression. Both libido and sexual function could be significantly improved. Among other things, a 2008 study suggests that taking Maca can alleviate psychological symptoms of depression. Especially women who suffered from postmenopausal depression were able to benefit from the effect. This can be attributed mainly to the positive properties of the hormone balance. At the same time, taking Maca reduces other problems of depression such as weight gain or infertility.

For the treatment of male infertility

Regular intake has shown in a study that maca can combat infertility. Taking for two weeks allowed the sperm count of the subjects to double. The mobility and quality of sperm also increased steadily.

against postmenopausal complaints

Researchers found that taking maca tea over six weeks can work against postmenopausal discomfort. It has the ability to normalize blood pressure and combat problems such as anxiety disorders and depression. During menopause, a disturbance in the natural hormone balance often occurs. Maca helps to balance natural estrogen levels and thus combats symptoms of postmenopause.

for an improved general condition

The experience of various consumers showed that regular consumption led to an improved general condition. Subjects benefited from more energy in everyday life and a balanced mood. Consumers also felt more alert and had more stamina. Studies have confirmed this effect, but the exact mechanism of action of the euphoric effect is still unknown. One possible reason for this may be the regulation of blood sugar levels. Natural falls in blood sugar levels can be prevented, so the natural energy level can be maintained throughout the day. Especially the powder of the black root has a positive effect on the general well-being.

Among other things, the effect can alleviate many other burdens, such as:

  • Osteoporosis
  • Anemia
  • Depression
  • Problems with menstruation
  • Leukemia
  • Chronic exhaustion and fatigue

The substance is easily digestible and can therefore also be used as a coffee substitute.

Gelatinized powder is boiled under pressure and is therefore fine as powder. This powder is bottled in capsules or pressed into tablets. In this form, the product no longer contains starches and is easier to digest. Unfortunately, it also loses some of its essential vital substances in this form.

Capsules and tablets are completely tasteless and very well tolerated. Especially people with inflammatory bowel diseases benefit from this dosage form. The maximum dose of three grams per day should not be exceeded.

The human organism can only produce this amino acid to a limited extent itself and is dependent on food supply. As it is native to the Andes, it is also known as andandg ginseng. Even regular intake of only two weeks improves the number and motility of sperm.
